Mechanical carpentry: the main metalworking processes

When we talk about mechanical carpentry, we are referring to a wide range of metalworking processes, from the most common to the most complex. Some operations, such as drilling, are easily understood, while others, such as reaming and boring, are less well-known to non-experts. Let's see an overview of the main techniques adopted by companies in the sector, such as Stox Srl of Noventa di Piave, specialized in mechanical carpentry and precision assembly.

Drilling
Drilling consists of creating a hole in the metal. It may seem like a simple operation, but in reality it has numerous variations:

• through cylindrical hole, which passes completely through the piece,
• countersunk hole, with conical mouth,
• multi-profile hole, with different diameters along the depth.

The techniques also vary: from plunge drilling, which proceeds vertically, to core drilling, which removes only the outer ring, to non-rotating drilling, in which it is the piece that moves and not the tool.

Milling
Milling involves the removal of material to obtain precise surfaces. It is divided into two phases:
• roughing, for rapid removal of the material,
• finishing, for finishing the piece.

Among the main types:

• spinning (flat and smooth surface),
• profiling (2D and 3D concave/alternate shapes),
• milling of slots or grooves,
• chamfer milling (inclined corners),
• shoulder milling, with the simultaneous creation of two faces.

Turning
Turning is used to create cylindrical shapes. The tool remains stationary while the workpiece rotates. Here too we distinguish two phases, roughing and finishing, and various techniques:
• internal turning, on the internal diameter,
• external turning, on the outside of the piece, with variations such as:
o longitudinal, along the axis,
or facing, on the face,
or profiling, for complex profiles,
or plunge, for grooves.

Reaming
It is a finishing operation that uses high-speed multi-edge tools to obtain precise and correct-sized holes. It is often combined with drilling to perfect the final result.

Boring
Similar to reaming, boring allows you to enlarge already drilled holes, creating precise cylindrical cavities by removing the chip. The name derives from the tool used: the boring bar.

Manual and CNC
All these processes can be performed:
• manually, by expert operators who operate the machine tools,
• via CNC (numerical control computerized), where the process is managed by dedicated software.

CNC machining guarantees maximum precision, high quality standards, and virtually zero margins of error, making it the benchmark in modern mechanical carpentry today.

Thanks to the integration of artisanal know-how and intelligent automation, Stox Srl continues to evolve according to the principles of Industry 4.0, offering its customers tailor-made solutions, optimized times, and high-level performance in every metalworking process.

New milling grade for predictable tool life in titanium machining

Sandvik Coromant combines EthaCore™ carbide technology and Zertivo® technology in the GC1250 grade to improve process security and reduce the carbon footprint of its tools. Sandvik Coromant, a leading manufacturer of cutting tools and manufacturing solutions, has developed the GC1250 grade for indexable insert milling. This new grade is specifically designed for machining titanium alloys. This grade combines EthaCore™ carbide technology with a nano-multilayer PVD (physical vapor deposition) coating to optimize impact toughness, durability, process reliability, and reduce environmental impact. Titanium's poor thermal conductivity causes intense heat concentrations to build up at the cutting edge, accelerating the risk of wear, chipping, and unexpected insert failure. The GC1250 grade solves these problems with a completely new structure that combines Sandvik Coromant's patented EthaCore™ carbide platform with Zertivo® nano-multilayer PVD coating technology. The customer value proposition focuses on three key elements: innovation, performance, and sustainability. The resilient substrate has been designed to adapt to changing thermomechanical loads, helping to increase tool life predictability, reduce unexpected failures, and prevent potential production downtime. " The GC1250 grade sets a new standard in titanium milling with its incredible performance in terms of impact toughness and predictability ," says Wayne Mason, Global Product Application Manager for Grades at Sandvik Coromant. " By reducing the number of insert breakages and unexpected stoppages, this grade is a solution that helps customers optimize machine utilization and the cost-effectiveness of their machining processes ." The GC1250 grade also contributes to achieving sustainability goals. EthaCore™ achieves a substantially lower carbon footprint than leading competitor grades, which instead use ruthenium-based carbide in this application. " Advances in performance and sustainability increasingly need to go hand in hand, " adds Mason. " The GC1250 is a solution that enables safe and profitable machining of titanium while reducing the carbon footprint associated with the tools needed to machine it ." Grade GC1250 is optimized for roughing to semi-finishing operations in titanium alloys. It is designed for wet machining and is available for a wide range of CoroMill® concepts for shoulder milling, face milling, slot milling, high-feed milling, and profiling. The introduction of the GC1250 grade also completes the 1200 series, creating a comprehensive offering covering all major processing material groups. Customers now have access to the most advanced coating and substrate technologies for a wide range of applications. Sandvik Coromant Together with our customers and partners, Sandvik Coromant provides tooling solutions to metalworking industries worldwide. Over eighty years of practical experience have allowed us to build a wealth of knowledge in metal cutting and machining. This expertise transforms every challenge into an opportunity for innovation, collaboration, and cutting-edge solutions. Our goal is to drive positive change by fostering efficiency and growth to shape a future where innovation is at the forefront.
